USGA Green Section – Turf Advisory Service Report

On August 23rd Senior Agronomist, Jim Skorulski, representing the USGA made his annual visit to Cranberry Valley to assess the course condition and the overall operation of CVGC. Dennis Hoye, Shawn Fernadez, Rob Donovan, and Clem Smith were in attendance.
The following is a condensation of his report, and a sampling of his major conclusions:
- The continuing management program introduced several years ago is working.
- Greens: are in excellent condition for the time of year, and the surface and pace were consistent with “some of the best Private Courses” that he monitors. Light topdressing on a monthly basis was suggested when practical.
- Trees: continued removal of trees is vital to the entire operation. Also, various shrub grouping too close to play should be removed completely. “The shrub plantings do not fit in the golf course setting”. Tree removal will benefit tee boxes on numbers 3,4,5,6,10 and 14. *( They should be the focus of winter work)
- Tee boxes: Number 6 tee and 12 are slated for renovation.
- Fairways: Core aerification and overseeding with ryegrass has created a more durable turf.
- Equipment: Inventory is being kept up-to-date. Consideration should be given to purchasing pond diffusers to improve water quality. Emphasis was put on the importance of grinding equipment and the need to keep it up to date.
- Cart Paths: Utilizing a plan to update cart paths to mesh with tee box renovation should not be forgotten. “The objective should be to place cart paths where they will be used but will be less conspicuous, and will help to keep golfers safe.”
In conclusion, “I want to commend Mr. Fernandez, his entire staff, and Mr. Hoye for making the golf course one of the better public facilities in New England. The operations are efficient and the priorities for the golf course appear very sound. The continued popularity of the golf course and its ability to make a profit are good indications of the strength of the management team and programs in place. Well done!”

Primary Objectives of the 2012-13 Season:
- Tree removal
- Core cultivation of fairways
- Thatch reduction
